Mercedes E-Class coupe and convertible pictures revealed

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled pictures and released new details of the E-Class coupe and cabriolet, less than a month after it revealed the E-Class saloon and estate body styles. The new two-door cars will offer drivers a sexier, more sporty-looking package than their businessman-carrying, family-lugging counterparts.

Behold, Merc’s new E-Class coupe and cabriolet editions.

There’s no denying these are the most aggressive-looking E-Class coupe and convertible models yet. The cars have larger air intakes than their predecessors, and Mercedes’ familiar quad headlamp ‘four-eyed face’ aesthetic has been toned down slightly. They now feature a two headlamp layout, although each of these is divided below the lens. The cars look particularly attractive from the rear thanks, in part, to a very wide stance and redesigned tail lights.

The E-Class coupe and cabrio have interiors that are ostensibly the same as you’ll find in the new saloon or estate. The speedo, rev counter and petrol gauges are white-backed and framed by three aluminium-tipped tubes, and there’s a redesigned, modern-looking infotainment head unit that helps reinforce the impression this is a more modern car.

Mercedes-Benz claims the cabriolet version has the lowest noise level in its class, thanks to high grade insulation on the acoustic soft top.

Engines in the coupe and cabrio are the same as those that feature in the saloon and estate. Buyers can choose from a a single petrol and two diesel lumps, all of which are slightly tweaked versions of the units found in the previous model. The petrol engine, a 2-litre four-cylinder direct-injection unit, develops 181bhp in the E220 and 208bhp in the E250. A 2.1-litre four-cylinder common rail diesel is used in the 168bhp E220 CDI and the 201bhp E250 CDI.

Sadly, the all-conquering E500 flagship model, with its monstrous twin-turbocharged V8, has been deleted from the range. Instead, the new flagship is an E350, which is powered by a 3-litre V6 diesel that produces 248bhp.

So, it’s not very fast, but the coupe and cabriolet will both come fitted with Merc’s Agility Control suspension system as standard. According to Mercedes, this features shock absorbers that adapt to the road surface, allowing the system to deliver good ride comfort and sporty handling.

Safety-conscious drivers will be pleased to hear the E-Class coupe and convertible have the same abundance of damn near self-driving safety equipment as the saloon and estate. It’ll stay in its lane if you doze off, brake automatically to avoid hitting objects and people in front and even parks itself.

Mercedes-Benz has yet to confirm pricing for the coupe and cabriolet, but we’ll pass on this information as soon as we have it.
