New 2013 Range Rover Sport pictures, price and release date revealed

The new Range Rover Sport was officially unveiled yesterday in New York at a start studded event ahead of the NY motor show. The car is reportedly the fastest, most agile vehicle Land Rover has ever created and, all things considered, it’s right up there with the best looking as well. Have a look at the pictures and tell us we’re wrong.

The new Range Rover Sport has a more modern, contemporary look about it, mixing styling cues from the standard Range Rover and the smaller Evoque. It’s slightly less formal-looking than the standard model, with a sportier, more muscula design.

Looks are, of course, subjective — one man’s Beyonce is another man’s Jay-Z — but there’s no arguing with the engineering beneath the surface. The Range Rover Sport ditches the steel undergubbins of its predecessor in favour of harder, lighter aluminium, which helps reduce weight by up to 420kg. This, says Land Rover, increases the agility and improves the driving dynamics of the vehicle, but also improves performance and efficiency.

At launch, the Range Rover Sport will be available with a choice of two engines – a supercharged 5-litre 510PS V8 petrol unit and a 3-litre 292PS SDV6 diesel lump. These will be joined in early 2014 by a 3-litre 258PS TDV6, a 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8 diesel and even a diesel hybrid model. All diesel and petrol models will use Land Rover’s fancy new 8-speed automatic gearbox, not the new nine-speed model unveiled recently.

Performance should be brisk – the top of the range supercharged V8 will be able to complete the 0-60mph dash in five seconds – while fuel consumption has been cut by up to 24 per cent depending on the model. CO2 emissions start from 194g/km, which puts the entry-level model in the £245 per year band J category, but expect the diesel hybrid version to achieve an impressive 169g/km.

Expect lots of tech inside the new Range Rover Sport. It’ll feature a new colour head-up display that shows key vehicle and navigation information in the driver’s line of sight, active cruise control with a queue assist feature that basically allows the car to drive itself whilst in traffic, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot that lets passengers use the Internet on their laptops or tablets.
