New Kia Soul gets a host of upgrades for 2014

Kia has been busy updating its Soul hatchback. Everybody’s favourite toaster on wheels will boast tweaked styling, a new platform, improved emissions, more interior and luggage space and higher levels of specification and customisation.

Aesthetically, the 2014 Kia Soul draws inspiration from the Kia Track’ster concept, incorporating a more contemporary design. It’ll be available in 11 exterior paint finishes and three contrasting roof colours, leaving plenty of scope for personalisation. Kia will also make available the option of an SUV styling pack, which features piano black bumper trim, side skirts, wheel arches and a black painted roof.

Whereas the existing car is based on modified version of the Kia Rio supermini, the new car is slightly larger and sits on the same chassis as the latest Kia Cee’d. Kia says this results in superior ride and handling, with best in class refinement thanks to upgraded suspension, a 29 per cent stiffer bodyshell and upgraded soundproofing.

The 2014 Kia Soul boasts slightly larger dimensions than its outgoing cousin, with a longer wheelbase and wider track contributing to increased interior space for passengers and luggage. Cargo space has jumped by 4 per cent to 354 litres and leg, head and shoulder room are increased for all passengers.

The new Soul will use the same 1.6-litre GDi petrol and CRDi diesel engines as the current car, alongside six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. However both will feature improved CO2 emissions.

Buyers can also expect a host of new ‘premium’ features including front LED daytime running lights, xenon headlights, rear LED ‘halo’ lights, keyless entry with push-button engine starting, automatic climate control, cruise control, leather upholstery, ventilated and heated front and rear seats and a panoramic glass sunroof.

The 2014 Kia Soul will go on show at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, with cars going on sale across Europe early in 2014.
