New Smart fortwo and forfour pictures, price and specs

Mercedes-Benz has announced new versions of the Smart fortwo and forfour. Three new engines and a revised interior and exterior separate the new pint-sized runaround from its lovable predecessor.

The new two-door Smart fortwo still measures a paltry 2.69 metres in length, yet the turning circle has been reduced to further aid inner-city maneuverability. Just 6.95 metres are needed from kerb to kerb, while the 3.49 metre Smart forfour needs 8.65 metres.

Two new engines will be available at launch. There’s a naturally aspirated 71hp 999cc petrol that develops 91Nm from 2,850rpm and a top-spec turbocharged 898cc petrol that develops 90hp, 100lb/ft of torque from 2,500rpm and has a start/stop system to save fuel.

A 60hp entry-level petrol engine will be added a few months later. No word on whether an electric version – aka the Electric Drive – will be brought to market.

All engines can be mated to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed ‘twinamic’ dual clutch automatic, depending on preference.

Handling is said to be improved, thanks to a 100mm wider track and rear-mounting of the engine in both the fortwo and forfour – a first for the latter.

Boot space is plentiful in the forfour. The rear seat backrests can be folded down to provide a cargo area of up to 975-litres. In the fourtwo you get a still impressive 350 litres.

‘Passion’, ‘prime’ and ‘proxy’ make up the three available equipment levels. All cars benefit from LED daytime running lights, central locking, immobiliser, cruise control with limiter, electric windows in the front and an instrument cluster with an LCD display and trip computer.

Extras afforded by the higher up equipment levels include a 3.5-inch colour display, heated seats, leather multi-function steering wheel and a JBL sound system comprised a 240w 6-channel DSP amplifier and eight speakers. The roomier forfour gets a JBL 8-channel amp and 12 speakers.

The new smart forfour is twinned with the new Twingo. Both Smarts benefit from a new look, including a swanky honeycomb grille, the option of either black, cool silver or white body panels and new front lamps. We definitely prefer the Smart’s funkier new clothes.

There will also be an edition #1 version on sale for a limited time, which offers a slightly different exterior colour palette if that sort of thing floats your boat.

The entry-level new smart fortwo will cost less than €11,000 euros when it goes on sale in November 2014. A smart forfour will cost an extra 600 euros with the same engine. We will let you know the UK price and specs as soon as Mercedes gives us the lowdown.
