Nissan GT-R Convertible is so wrong yet so right

Californian firm reveals a breezy Nissan GT-R Convertible conversion ─ and it ain’t half bad.

From the company that brought you the abomination that was the Range Rover convertible comes a potent modification to the Nissan GT-R. Newport Convertible Engineering has taken an angle-grinder (not literally) to create a Convertible edition it plans to sell in limited numbers.

Newport Convertible Engineering offers three different designs when it comes to turning the Nissan GT-R into a drop-top. A folding fabric roof, as opposed to a tin-top, opens and closes at your discretion.

The drop-top GT-R will be marketed in California, Barcelona, Spain and Dubai. We’re guessing the UK’s rain was a bit of a turn-off, although you could always get one imported.

The changes are purely aesthetic from what we’ve gathered, which means the GT-R’s impressive 542bhp 3.8-litre twin-turbo lump should propel the cabrio from 0 to 62mph in around 2.8 seconds up to a top speed of 193mph. Of course, that all depends on how much weight the convertible modification adds.

Other cars that can be given the convertible treatment include the Ford Mustang GT350, Jaguar XJ, Ferrari Testarossa and Ferrari 612 Scaglietti.

Best to give Newport Convertible Engineering a buzz if you fancy yourself one of the fastest accelerating convertibles in existence. Nissan is, after all, unlikely to make it an official model. In the meantime, pictures of the GT-R Convertible await.

Yay or nay? Let us know.
