Toyota Prius drivers might want to look away now because Porsche’s latest hybrid looks set to make every other eco car on the planet seem more than a little inadequate. The company’s revealed official specs, final pictures and a wealth of specs for its new flagship, the Porsche 918 Spyder.
Take a look at the Porsche 918 Spyder pictures below then scroll back up and check out these numbers: 887hp, 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds, 211mph, 85mpg and 79g/km. “Dear rest of the world,” you can almost hear Porsche’s execs saying, “please read these figures aloud then commence weeping.”
If nothing else, you might shed a tear at the price, which starts at 781,155 Euro.
As we’ve reported in the past, the Porsche 918 Spyder uses a 4.6-litre V8 engine that sends 612hp to the front wheels and a 115kW electric motor that sends an extra 154hp to the rear axle. The combined grunt allows the aforementioned 0-62 sprint time and, if you’re brave enough to keep your foot in, 0-124mph in 7.9 and 0-186mph in 23 seconds dead.
It’s pretty hardcore then, but if you want yet more aggression you’re advised to invest in the Weissach package, which comes with a custom paint finish derived from legendary Porsche race cars of old. In this form, the roof, rear wings, rear-view mirrors and frames of the windscreen are made of visible carbon, while parts of the interior are daubed in Alcantara instead of leather and aluminium.
The Weissach pack also removes sound deadening materials, trades the standard alloys for lightweight magnesium wheels (saving 35kg in the process) and adds six-point seatbelts for driver and passenger, plus optional film coating instead of body paint.
All that extra sportiness doesn’t come cheap, though. The Porsche 918 Spyder with the Weissach package will set you back a not inconsiderable 853,155 Euro.
If that sounds excessive then you can take solace in the fact that you’ll be doing your bit for the environment. The car is equipped with a 6.8kWh lithium-ion battery, which allows it to be driven in purely electric mode for 18 miles. Driven in normal hybrid mode, the Porsche 918 Spyder will return better mileage than most ordinary road cars – not bad for a beast that can reach well over 200mph.
