Renault wants to reclaim the Nurburgring record stolen by the Seat Leon Cupra 280 with a special edition Megane.
Seat better sleep with one eye open from now on. Renault is going for the front-wheel drive production car Nurburgring record held by the Leon Cupra 280 with a special edition model known as the Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy.
The Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy is yet another high-performance version of the Megane that follows in the footsteps of the 265 Trophy and Red Bull Racing RB8. An array of standard and optional performance upgrades to give it improved track credentials.
Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which has been tuned to develop an additional 10 horsepower, taking the total to 275hp. 360Nm of torque is available from 3,000rpm. Fuel economy and CO2 emissions are 37.7mpg and 174g/km, respectively. No word on performance figures.
Standard fixtures include a limited slip differential, titanium exhaust system with carbon tail pipe, personalised Trophy decals, 19-inch black Speedline Turini wheels, alloy gear knob and leather and Alcantara Recaro bucket seats. You also get red stitching on the Alcantara steering wheel and handbrake gaiter.
Optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and adjustable Öhlins Road & Track Dampers with steel springs inspired by the Megane N4 rally car are available for anyone who spends more time racing than driving A to B.
The Seat Leon Cupra 280 lapped the Nurburgring in 7:58.4, bettering the Renault Megane RS Trophy time of 8:07.97 set in 2011. Like the 275 Trophy, a 2.0-litre turbo is the star of the show. It produces 276bhp (280PS, hence the name) and 350Nm of torque. 0 to 62mph takes 5.7 seconds.
A UK price and specification will be confirmed in June, according to Renault. First deliveries will arrive in October. We’ll have to wait and see whether Renault can reclaim its front-wheel drive crown.
