Self-balancing SBU V3 unicycle is a new way to roll

Four and two-wheeled transport is so last century. In the future, we’ll all be commuting on a self-balancing unicycles like the SBU V3. Maybe.

This odd-looking contraption may resemble a circus accessory, but note the lack of old-school pedals. That’s because the SBU V3 has a brushless DC motor and lithium-ion battery built in, allowing it to whisk you around in silence up to speeds of 10mph. It has a range of 10 miles or one hour of riding when running at full tilt.

The company behind the SBU VC says it takes no more than 30 minutes to learn to ride one. You lean forward to go forward and lean back to slow down or stop. Steering is done by leaning towards the direction you want to travel. Falling off is pretty difficult, as a 3-axis gyroscope and 3-axis accelerometer system monitors your position, allowing it to perform 1,000 balance calculations per second.

For the most balance-challenged riders, there is an optional ‘noob wheel’ to help you get up to speed and the V3 actively learns how you ride it to make life easier.

Because the V3 weighs a measly 12.2kg it could be lugged on a train or in a car without hassle. Once at work, it should be easy to hide away, too.

Use of strong 6061 alloy means the V3 unicycle can support riders up to 148kg (23 stone) and riders between 5’1″ and 6’7″, making it a viable option for the laziest and/or tallest commuters.

The cost of looking like a clown on your way to work? £1,685. That’s slightly cheaper than a Toyota Winglet and a Segway. You can buy one from Eddyline.
