Volvo S60 Polestar concept set to terrify BMW M3s

Volvo is typically best known for its festidious approach to automotive safety, but the company has demonstrated it also has a wild side. It’s shown off a new S60 Polestar concept that could run rings around the BMW M3.

The S60 Polestar Concept was unveiled yesterday at the Gothenburg City Race in Sweden, where it wowed onlookers with its sexy sky blue paint job and a frankly ridiculous headline power figure of 508bhp. No, that’s not a typo.

The car uses the same straight six ‘T6’ engine as used in the standard S60 and V60. However this 3-litre mill features modified combustion chambers, a tweaked inlet manifold as well as a huge Garret 3171 turbo providing additional boost. The result is enough power to shame most sports cars and an impressive 575Nm of torque.

To cope with this extra grunt, Volvo has strengthened the 6-speed gear box and supplied an all-wheel-drive transmission to help channel the power to the ground. 0-62mph launches happen in a quoted 3.9 seconds and it’ll keep going until G forces cause you to faint or the car hits a terminal velocity of 186mph.

That, whichever way you look at it, is Ferrari territory — in a Volvo.

With all that extra speed, you won’t be surprised to learn the S60 Concept features Brembo six-piston callipers and vented discs. It also features a few tweaks to aid handling, including a wider and lower chassis — 20mm wider at the front, 40mm at the rear and 30mm lower all round — alongside Ohlins race-inspired 3-way adjustable shock absorbers.

Sadly, the Volvo S60 Concept is not intended for series production, so you can’t just pop out to the shops and order one. But, as is the case with most concepts, if you cross your fingers, click your heels and stroke your lucky rabbit’s foot vigorously enough (or you could just hand Volvo a bag full of cash) there’s every chance the company will build one for you.

Update: An unnamed individual has bought the S60 Polestar concept for a staggering $300,000 (£190,00), Autoblog has reported. That’s easy money for Polestar, and we’re sure the company will build another for anyone who’s willing to hand over the cash. Here’s hoping the S60 Polestar proves popular enough to enter series production, which would necessitate a lower price point.

They say it'll do 0-62mph in under 4 seconds and can reach 186mph.
