TalkTalk Plus: Free LoveFilm, YouView and TalkTalk TV for £14.50 a month

What’s happened with TalkTalk TV and YouView?

TalkTalk’s YouView service is now available to order and comes free with the TalkTalk Plus broadband package.

Last week saw the long-awaited launch of the Huawei-made box – which we’ve gone hands-on with here – to much hype and celebrity-assisted fanfare.

The service lets you sign up for a number of extra channels including Sky Sports and Sky Movies which are accessed through the TalkTalk Player, an area populated with premium on-demand content – check out our hands-on here.

Alongside this is access to the regular YouView channels. These are the same digital terrestrial channels you’d get with Freeview, but with YouView you get to skip back in time on the programme guide as well. Right now you can just skip back on BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 channels, as this backwards catch-up function is powered by the iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand Five services.

TalkTalk Plus, which bundles TalkTalk YouView in for free, costs £14.50/month plus £9.50/month for line rental, which works out at £24/month in total.

There’s also a one-off £50 fee which will covers the engineer visit and installation.

Extra TV channels like Sky 1 can be added for an extra £5/month on top of TalkTalk Plus, and Sky Sports and Sky Movies can be had for £30/month and £15/month respectively. We’ve previously broken down the costs of the TalkTalk Player channels so you’ll be able to work out how much it is a month to get what you want.

TalkTalk has announced its own-branded YouView box today, throwing in a year’s free subscription to Lovefilm along with the chance to subscribe to premium channels like Sky Sports and Sky Movies.

Customers ordering the TalkTalk Plus package will have the option of getting a free YouView box (worth £299) thrown in. As well as giving you access to the usual digital terrestrial channels that you’d get with Freeview, you’ll eventually be able to watch Lovefilm Instant movies through the TalkTalk Player section of the programme guide.

Part of the deal will also see customers able to access Lovefilm on their iPad, phone or laptop too – this is a year’s subscription to proper, full fat Lovefilm Instant.

Lovefilm Box Office movies can also be rented on-demand for £2.50 a pop.

TalkTalk today announced that new and existing subscribers of the TalkTalk Plus (£14.50 a month) package will be able to get a free YouView box (worth £299). The TalkTalk-branded Huawei box (not the same as this Humax box) will let subscribers access to TalkTalk TV through the TalkTalk Player and a 12 month subscription to LoveFilm Instant will also be bundled in for free.

“TalkTalk Plus customers will, from today, be able to pre-register for their free YouView set top box with no additional monthly subscription,” says Dido Harding, TalkTalk Chief Executive. “This compelling offer is the UK’s best value triple play package. It will give our customers more reasons to stay with us for longer and attract new broadband customers.”

Throw in unlimited downloads and unlimited landline calls as standard (plus the option to upgrade to TalkTalk Fibre) and you’ve got a pretty competitive package.

Sorry, what’s YouView again?

YouView is a new digital TV platform which lets you watch free digital TV and pull up previously broadcast programmes from BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5 all from one seamless menu. It’s perhaps best thought of as Freeview HD with a streamlined on-demand system (see our What is YouView? feature).

TalkTalk Plus: Free LoveFilm, YouView and TalkTalk TV for £14.50 a monthOK great. How much does TalkTalk Plus cost?

New customers will need to sign up for an 18 month TalkTalk Plus contract while existing customers will need to sign up for 24 months.

The cost of line rental also varies depending on whether or not you take out TalkTalk’s cheaper Value Line Rental. At £9.50 a month compared to the usual £14.50 a month, this offers significant savings over the duration of a contract.

TalkTalk Value Line Rental is only available online and requires you to register a MyAccount with TalkTalk.

Bear in mind that TalkTalk Plus comes with a free LoveFilm subscription for a year and a YouView box.

LoveFilm costs £4.99 a month and the YouView box is worth £299. Depending on how you look at it, this works out at a saving of roughly £30 a month or a hefty saving of £360 on your first year’s costs.

Note that the offer of one year of LoveFilm is only available to customers signing up through MyAccount (which means you’ll also get the lower cost line rental) from now until the 31st August 2012.

If you’re not currently a TalkTalk customer and you like the idea of YouView this could be a great opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. It’d be better if LoveFilm started streaming movies on YouView as well but you can’t always have everything.

For a better idea of the features of YouView check out our YouView hands on video here. We’ve also rounded up what channels and packages can be added to your TalkTalk TV subscription here.
