Apple iPhone 8 vs iPhone 8 Plus vs iPhone X: Which is best for me?

Apple launch day has finally happened and all the leaks for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X have become a reality. So which is your next iPhone?

Now we have not one, not two but three iPhones to pick from when upgrading this year. Is that top-end AMOLED-toting iPhone X worth a second mortgage in order to pay for it or is the iPhone 8 the best a phone can be as it is? There are plenty of benefits for each device so we’ve rounded up all you need to know in this handy comparison feature. Read on to find out which is the best iPhone for you.

iPhone X has a better screen than iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

If you want the most eye-watering display then you’re going to want to shell out extra for the iPhone X. At 5.8-inches this is not only the largest display on an iPhone ever but it’s also is the only AMOLED panel in the running, meaning richer colours, better contrast, faster refresh rates and superior battery efficiency.

The Super Retina Display, as it’s called, offers 2436×1125 resolution for 458ppi. It’s also HDR-capable with Dolby Vision and HDR10 support, boasts a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, high colour accuracy, 3D Touch and True Tone. All with that edge to edge bezel-free finish and a lack of home button for a more seamless look.

The iPhone 8 Plus is close on size at 5.5-inches, while the iPhone 8 stays down at the 4.7-inch mark; they too now integrate True Tone tech for better colour accuracy as well.

Both use LCD displays meaning a bit more battery consumption but then again, as they’re smaller and pack a lower resolution things should balance out, meaning you’ll likely notice very little difference in power usage.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus also use the more traditional Apple design with Touch ID-laden home button along the bottom bezel.

iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus have better cameras than iPhone 8

The dual cameras of the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus mean the new generation of iPhone are built for augmented reality. They are also able to capture more photo data thanks to the new HEIF file format, which not only means better quality pics but ones that take up less room on your phone too.

The iPhone X has the best dual camera setup with an f/1.8 wide-angle and f/2.4 telephoto 12-megapixel sensor, each packing OIS. The only real difference when compared to the iPhone 8 Plus, is that the latter only benefits from optical image stabilisation on its wide-angle sensor.

iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 are all fast

All three new iPhones sports the latest A11 Bionic chip, which means super-fast processing backed by an Apple-designed GPU. It sports a six-core CPU with two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores too. All that should mean the fastest phones yet, all future-proofed and able to handle the high-end processing requirements of augmented reality data, the latest games and more.

The phones’ A11 Bionic chips are all 25 per cent faster than the A10, while the high-efficiency cores specifically are 70 percent faster.

iPhone X has a new home button-free interface

Now, you only have to touch the display to unlock the iPhone X, then swipe up to go to the Home Screen, which works anytime, even when in full-screen apps. Or do this with a pause as you swipe up to switch between apps. There is also a dedicated side button to tap for Siri or double-tap for Apple Pay.

iPhone X uses facial recognition called Face ID

The iPhone X uses facial recognition to unlock in place of your fingerprint. The new tech is called Face ID and it relies on an advanced front-facing TrueDepth camera system. This TrueDepth system uses infrared sensors, a flood illuminator, a dot projector and the regular front-facing snapper camera to authenticate your mug, even in dark environments.

The A11 Bionic chip uses a neural engine just for processing facial recognition with 600 billion operations per second. Plus, of course, it’s all locally stored and super secure. The X uses the same processor as the 8 and 8 Plus, it’s just given a more challenging task to do.

iPhone X is more secure than iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

The smart thing is that it adapts so that if you grow a beard, change your hair or tweak your makeup it will learn to adjust over time and adapt to still recognise your face. Compared to Touch ID it’s also more secure. The chance of a random fingerprint unlocking the Touch ID sensor on your phone is 1 in 50,000 but the odds of a stranger successfully spoofing Face ID is supposedly 1 in 1,000,000.

iPhone X has special Animoji

Animoji, as you may have guessed, are animated emojis that you control with your face. These animate by tracking your face through the iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera and recognise more than 15 facial muscle movements to give expression to the characters on offer.

You can pick from one of 12 animoji characters and record voices clips to go along with them. As it relies on the TrueDepth camera, this feature is only available to the iPhone X right now.

iPhone 8 has more affordable price than iPhone X or iPhone 8 Plus

Despite all the great new features exclusively on offer from the iPhone X, with a starting price tag of £999 many Apple fans will likely have to resort to lengthy contracts or Apple’s own upgrade program in order to afford one.

As such the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which still benefit from the same wireless charging, water-resistant design and beefier processor, will prove far more approachable for a lot of people. The base iPhone 8, which boasts the same 64GB of storage as the base 8 Plus and X, costs £300 less than Apple’s new top handset, whilst the base 8 Plus costs £200 less than the iPhone X.
