Nexus Marlin: The new 2016 Google Nexus phone in a nutshell

Leaks have revealed that there will be two new Google Nexus phones in 2016, the Nexus Sailfish by HTC and a second mobile nicknamed the Nexus Marlin. Here’s all you need to know about the Google Nexus Marlin, including rumoured specs, the possible launch date and more.

What is the Nexus Marlin?

Each year Google launches at least one own-brand Nexus mobile phone, which are always the first handsets to boast the latest version of Google’s Android OS. This is always a vanilla version of Android, with none of the heavy overlays that a lot of mobiles come packing (such as the Samsung Galaxy S7, Sony’s Xperia X and other big Android phones).

Google doesn’t actually design and manufacture these Nexus phones itself, however. For instance, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P from 2015 were built by LG and Huawei respectively. In 2016 it appears that HTC will be manufacturing at least one of the new Nexus phones, and most likely both – the Nexus Sailfish and the Nexus Marlin.

The Nexus Marlin appears to be the more powerful of the two new 2016 Nexus handsets, boasting a bigger (5.5-inch), sharper display than the Sailfish as well as the very latest Snapdragon 821 processor. This means it will also be the more expensive Nexus 2016 phone.

What are the Nexus Marlin’s specs?

The Nexus Marlin hasn’t been officially launched by Google, and so far all we have are rumoured specs:

5.5-inch Quad HD (2560×1440) screen

Snapdragon 821 processor

12-megapixel rear camera

8-megapixel selfie camera

4GB RAM

32GB storage (microSD support uncertain)

USB Type-C

What features will the Nexus Marlin have?

As with last year’s 2015 Nexus phones, the Nexus Marlin will boast a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for boosted security. You can also expect the funky new ‘Night Light Mode’, which like Apple’s Night Shift mode makes the phone more comfortable to use in the evening.

And of course you’ll get all of the new Android Nougat features packed in there, before any other phone gets the update.

Do we know the UK price and release date for the Nexus Marlin?

Google hasn’t officially announced the date of its next Nexus phone launch, but we’re expecting the new Nexus Marlin and Sailfish handsets to be revealed in September 2016. Check out our Next Android Event feature for more info.
