OnePlus 2 boasts a better fingerprint sensor than the iPhone

Pay attention Apple, because OnePlus has revealed that its next phone, the OnePlus 2, packs a fingerprint sensor that’s “twice as fast” as the iPhone’s.

The OnePlus 2 is due to be unveiled at 3am UK-time on July 28th during a special virtual reality launch event, but the company has broken the usual protocols by actively leaking details on the phone itself.

Today’s morsel, which was posted to the OnePlus official forums, states that device will launch with “one of the latest and most advanced fingerprint sensors out there.”

In the past, OnePlus has been fairly honest regarding its opinions of fingerprint sensing technology in non-Apple devices, hinting that it’s more of a novelty than serviceable technology. However, the company noted in its post that the tech has now reached a stage where it should be included – presumably owing to the native fingerprint sensing support which is part of Android M.

OnePlus has also done its arithmetic and claims that an accurate fingerprint sensor on a smartphone can save its user an hour each week, which would otherwise have been spent faffing around inputting PIN codes and the like. That’s an extra hour per week to watch Don’t Tell The Bride. Awesome.

As a raised middle finger aimed squarely at Cupertino, OnePlus also stated that its fingerprint sensor would unlock the device faster than Apple’s TouchID system, found on the latest iPhones and iPads.

We’ve also recently heard that the OnePlus 2 will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 when it launches. A decision that has divided opinions, owing to the chip’s predilection for getting hot and causing performance issues, as recently noted in our Sony Xperia Z3+ review.

OnePlus announced the decision to include the 810 alongside plenty of PR chatter, which laid out the countermeasures that are being taken to ensure good thermal performance. It’s a risky choice, but hopefully OnePlus can battle the heat where Sony failed.

We’ve also been told that the OnePlus 2 will sport a USB type-c connection, capable of some hefty data transfer speeds. Finally, some unofficial gossip has also strongly indicated that the device will launch with a 5.6-inch display and could boast a metallic chassis.

We’ll be covering the OnePlus 2 launch on July 28th.
