Samsung Galaxy A3 2016: Unboxing and first impressions

After our first few hours with the Galaxy A3, we’re really liking it. Samsung has refreshed the design and the A3 2016 edition basically looks like a mini Galaxy S6, complete with metallic edging and glass back. It’s comfortable to clutch and operate and packs improved specs across the board.

Samsung Galaxy A3 2016 specs: What’s the difference vs Galaxy A3 2015?

To start with, the Galaxy A3 2016 edition is bigger than the original Galaxy A3, with a 4.7-inch screen and 132g body compared with last year’s 4.5-inch Galaxy A3 (which weighed just 110g). The design has changed up too, with a new glass backing to complement the metallic frame.

And while the screen size has been bumped in size for the 2016 model, this new A3 also has a sharper 1280×720 pixel resolution. That gives you a crisp 312 pixels-per-inch (compared with 245ppi on last year’s A3), making it almost as sharp as the new iPhone SE‘s display.

Samsung has also updated the cameras for the new Galaxy A3, boosting last year’s 8-megapixel camera to a 13-megapixel snapper. On the front you once again get a 5-megapixel lens for your selfie shots. Check out our in-depth Galaxy A3 (2016) camera review for our full thoughts.

There’s no change in performance as far as specs are concerned, with a Snapdragon 410 on board, complete with 1.5GB of RAM. Android 5.1 comes pre-installed on the new Galaxy A3, which will hopefully be updated to Marshmallow in the near future.
