Virgin Media gets Hollyoaks’ Jennifer Metcalfe celebrate two millionth TiVo sign up

Virgin Media has signed up its two millionth TiVo customer and celebrated by getting Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe to drop by.

Favourite of the Lynch family in Manchester, Metcalfe, who plays bad girl Mercedes McQueen, turned up to present Virgin Media’s newest TiVo customers with a silver set-top box.

Virgin Media says that the latest milestone cements TiVo’s position as the fastest growing connected TV service in the UK.

Scott Kewley, Virgin Media’s director of digital entertainment, said: “Reaching two million TiVo customers is a huge milestone for us and we’re delighted so many people are enjoying what we believe is the best way to watch television.

“Virgin Media TiVo started a revolution in the way people watch and discover great TV and it’s clear from our growth that our customers agree. By offering different ways to watch, with subscription and pay-per-view options, all integrated into a straightforward, intuitive experience, there’s an unrivalled world of great entertainment at our customers’ fingertips.”

Virgin Media’s cable network sets aside a portion of bandwidth for TiVo’s smart TV features such as BBC Connected Red Button and Netflix, meaning these features can be launched without affecting download speeds elsewhere in the home.

This has seen use of apps and services launched on the TiVo platform climb up to 174 million in 2013, up from 104 million from the previous year. TiVo also received over 30 million ratings from its recommendations system – which allows viewers to give programmes a ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ on their remote – in January 2014.

This lets the TiVo service provide more accurate suggestions based on what you don’t like. Presumably every episode of Hollyoaks gets three thumbs ups from the Lynches.

When Virgin Media connected its millionth TiVo customer last year, the celeb-friendly company celebrated by getting none other than Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp to deliver a gold (Gold!) coloured TiVo box to Christine Ward of Eastcote Avenue, Nottingham.
