If you’ve got a Tesco Clubcard and your weekly shop isn’t getting the points you need for that free holiday, then signing up to a phone or broadband package will make a big impact.
As a supplier of well, almost everything from apples to xylophones, it’s not surprising that you can get your home broadband and phone connections through Tesco, and signing up to any of them will earn you three Clubcard points for every £1 spent on your bill. You can even pay your bill with points you earn elsewhere.
Tesco broadband and phone services aren’t complicated: sign up for both unless you want a hefty bill, and you’ll get up-to-20Mbps broadband plus free UK phone calls and competitive rates to UK mobiles. You can even buy accessories like routers, cables and broadband phones from Tesco Direct.
Tesco doesn’t operate its own broadband network, but has its service managed by global communications giant Cable & Wireless.
C&W supplies Tesco with up-to-20Mbps ADSL2+ broadband through BT exchanges which cover about 85 per cent of the UK population, and any connections outside this network are managed by BT on slower ADSL links.
Cable & Wireless wasn’t rated in the latest Ofcom broadband speed report, but the UK average for these services is 8.1Mbps download (with a range of 3-10Mbps).
In the package
All Tesco Broadband packages come with unlimited downloads, a Technicolor 582N wireless 'N' router (with four Ethernet ports) and UK call centres on an 0844 number which costs up to 6.5p/min plus 5p per call from BT lines Monday to Friday (it’s cheaper at evenings and weekends).
A 12-month contract is standard, but you can have a 30-day rolling contract if you pay a £40 connection fee (not on a Broadband-only contract).
The basic internet-only package is hidden away, but costs £16/month plus your line rental with your current phone provider. If you’re not on the Tesco network, you can get broadband only for £20/month.
Inclusive phone call packages with broadband start at £6.00/month plus Tesco’s line rental of £14.90/month (total £20.90/month), which comes with UK evening and weekend landline calls, or you can have anytime calls for £10.50/month plus line rental (total £25.40/month).
Tesco Internet Security costs an extra £2/month using F-Secure’s software with licences for three users, which includes a firewall, anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, browser protection, and parental controls.
There’s also a broadband accessories shop where you can buy a better wireless router, wireless dongles and cards for your PCs and laptops, powerline network adapters and voice-over-IP phones for calling via your broadband connection.
Home phone from Tesco starts with the Evening & Weekend Calls line rental plan at £14.90/month, which includes evening and weekend calls to UK landlines, anytime calls to other Tesco Home phone customers and unlimited calls to Tesco Directory Enquiries.
Anytime Calls adds calls at any time to UK landlines, for line rental plus £4.50/month (totalling £19.40/month), and Talk 3 adds anytime calls to UK landlines for for line rental plus £7/month.
Inclusive UK landline calls apply to numbers beginning 01, 02 and 03, and 0845/0870 numbers, up to 60 minutes in length. Weekends are all day Saturday and Sunday, while evenings cover 6pm-6am.
Basic Voicemail is free with both packages, with Voicemail Plus for £3/month.
Calls outside of inclusive periods are charged 7.5p/min weekdays and 6.6p/min evenings and weekends, with a connection fee of 12.5p for every chargeable call. Calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers are a flat rate of 7.5p/min.
Calls to UK mobiles cost 12.5p/min weekdays and 7.5p/min evenings and weekends. A new BT line will cost £30 to activate, and optional paper billing is charged at £1/month.
There's a £2/month charge for Caller Display, Call Waiting, Three-Way Calling (51p/use), Ring Back (15p/use), Reminder Calls (20p/use), Call Diversion, and Call Barring. Choose-to-refuse costs £3/month, with Anonymous Call Reject £4/momth.
Alternatively, Caller Display, Call Waiting, 3-Way Calling, Call Forwarding, Customer Initiated Barring, Reminder Call, Ring Back canbe bundled for £3/month for two features, £4.50/month for three features, or £6/month for up to six features.
