Samsung Galaxy Portal i5700: Feature-packed for a reasonable price

By Andrew Lim on Friday, 22nd January 2010

If there's one manufacturer we think can push Android out to the masses, it's Samsung. Today the South Korean mobile giant announced its latest Android handset, the Galaxy Portal i5700, which will be available on T-Mobile to begin with and other networks at a later date. The Portal runs Android 1.5 and boasts a 3.2-inch screen, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi, HSDPA and GPS.

According to Samsung, the Portal comes pre-installed with an augmented reality app (powered by Layar) which includes a football pub finder that shows nearby pubs showing football matches. It's worth noting that the Android market isn't as good as the iPhone app store just yet but it's getting there and we think that over time it will offer some really great apps.

On paper the Portal looks great but since we've never played with one we'll wait until we've tested it out properly before telling you to buy one. That said, if you desperate to buy an Android phone, T-Mobile will be offering the Portal from £20 per month, which isn't bad at all.
