Samurai II Vengeance hits Android Market: For great justice and Tegra 2-running devices

Samurai II: Vengeance, Madfinger’s manga-flavoured action game, has just arrived in the Android Market. We spent a good 15 minutes playing this at Mobile World Congress and so can attest to it’s addictive qualities and fluid gameplay.

It’s a top-down action game with simple virtual controls, a joystick and three attack buttons. The gameplay is simple and frenetic, but the lush, cartoony visuals, slick animation and swirling oriental soundtrack more than make up for it.

Much of the appeal can be found by mashing attack buttons and triggering combos, which sees the vengeful ronin Daisuke artfully slicing up bad guys into big bloody ribbons.

Yes, it’s violent and there’s a lot of claret, but it’s hardly what you’d call realistic. It’s best described as a cartoon version of the Crazy 88 scene from Kill Bill – but with more blood.

The visual style is a winning mix of intelligently positions itself so that you’ve always got a good view of each area and should be able to spot any enemies sneaking up on you.

The only real gripe about Samurai II: Vengeance is that chances are you won’t be able to play it. It’s a game that’s optimised for high end Android devices, ones with Tegra 2 chips in them. How many people here in the UK own a Motorola Xoom or LG Optimus 2X?

Still, it’s good to know that when the first Tegra 2 Androids hit, you’ll be able to go ahead and download this title right away, for great justice (and £2.95 from the Android Market).
