Is a BMW i8 with 500hp on the cards?

The BMW i8 is already capable of upsetting most cars, but it seems the German manufacturer has plans to make an even faster, more powerful version known as the i8S.

That’s according to a report in Automobile, which says BMW is working on the i8S as we type this. Two powertrains are being considered, the first of which would feature 320hp from a 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder and 204hp from an electric motor.

The second powertrain uses a 3.0-litre straight six with 480hp and a 109hp electric motor. Either way, a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission and 27hp starter motor are certain. The standard i8 develops 362hp.

If true, that would mean a staggering 500hp in a car that was already capable of 0 to 62mph in 4.4 seconds. Estimates suggest the i8S would cut that time down to just 3.5 seconds.

A stiffened chassis is also touted, which would make the ride more supercar-esque and capable in the corners at the expense of pothole-friendliness. No doubt efficiency, which is rated at 134.5mpg and 49g/km of CO2 emissions in the i8, will take a hit, too.

Supposedly the ‘i’ team at BMW is responsible for the i8S and not the M Division. That’s not to say the two won’t share notes, given M’s experience of lairy motors, but bear in mind the i division is headed up by ex-Ferrari man Roberto Fedeli. Supercar experience in the mix, then.

Previous reports suggested the BMW i8S would, in fact, be called the i9. The i8S is expected to arrive in 2016, the year BMW celebrates its centenary.

We fell in love with the BMW i8 earlier in the year, with editor Rory Reid concluding: “The future is here, and it’s brilliant; the i8 a sports car you can buy, and drive with a clear conscience.”
