UK Man blames grandmother for speeding… even though she lives in Africa

A driver from Essex told police that it wasn’t him behind the wheel of his VW Polo when it was discovered speeding, and blamed his grandmother. This could have been a believable story but for the fact the man’s grandmother lived thousands of miles away in another content.

Dillon Coker, 26, of Dagenham, Essex, was driving at 51mph in a 40mph zone in January. He was caught on speed camera on the A127 in Laindon, Essex. Coker told police it had actually been his grandmother behind the wheel.

When police examined Coker’s insurance policy, they discovered that his grandmother was not a named driver on the car, that she lived in Sierra Leone and had never visited the UK in her life.

Coker’s grandmother didn’t even have a driver’s license. Appearing at Basildon Crown Court, Coker pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice. He was given a six-month jail sentence, suspended for 12 months, ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid community service, and then hit with a bill for £500 in costs.

Maybe next time he should just pay the fine, or blame the speeding on someone who is actually able to drive in the UK.
