4G LTE in the UK will create 125,000 jobs, says Everything Everywhere

Everything Everywhere, aka Orange and T-Mobile, is keen to roll out of 4G LTE in the UK as soon as possible.

The latest bit of PR fanfare from the UK’s biggest network claims that some 125,000 jobs will be ‘created or safeguarded’ by the arrival of 4G LTE. Research carried out by Capital Economics on behalf of Everything Everywhere points to a number a juicy-sounding figures.

Everything Everywhere has put together an infographic showing exactly where said jobs will be created, with the South East of the UK benefiting from 27,669 safeguarded positions.

UK workers will apparently be saved 37 million work hours a year, presumably referring to time not spent on the daily commute.

With hybrid tablet/laptop devices like the Asus Transformer Prime, a new generation of lightweight Ultrabooks and services like Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive we’ve never had so many tools at our disposal. With the rollout of 4G in the UK, we’ll be more able to work remotely – and we’ll have less excuses for our bosses and managers.

4G LTE in the UK will add 0.5 per cent to the UK GDP by 2020

Olaf Swantee, CEO of Everything Everywhere, said in a statement that “this research highlights the significant economic and social benefits that 4G will bring to the UK – already enjoyed in over 30 countries around the world.”

“The UK has the highest levels of smartphone penetration and mobile commerce in Europe, and Britons deserve to have the best infrastructure in place to support this growth.”

4G LTE would make the UK an attractive prospect for start-ups and businesses; we’ve already heard how well the so-called Digital Economy is doing in the UK despite our creaky old broadband infrastructure and 4G-less networks.

Mark Pragnell of Capital Economics, who wrote the report, said: “The introduction of 4G mobile broadband will create substantial long-term benefits for the economy and consumers, ultimately boosting UK GDP by as much as half a percentage point. The near-term £5.5bn private industry investment we project is substantial – and opportune for the wider economy given the recent investment slump.”

As well as this, 4G LTE will inject £5.5 billion of private investment into the economy by 2015 and add 0.5 per cent (approx £75 billion in today’s money) to the UK GDP by 2020.

While the debate over spectrum allocation rolls on, Everything Everywhere has pressed on with rural and urban live trials and has lobbied to launch 4G services over its existing 3G networks. Recently, Everything Everywhere published a survey showing there’s healthy public demand for 4G LTE in the UK
