Amazon Instant Video announced: Pay per view movies and TV a la iTunes

On the same day that Prime Instant Video – the new name for Lovefilm Instant – arrives, Amazon will also launch Amazon Instant Video, a new pay per view movies and TV store.

Taking a leaf out of the iTunes and Blinkbox book, Amazon Instant Video will offer Amazon customers the chance to rent and buy TV and movie titles.

Roughly 50,000 titles will be available to watch and buy from launch from the Amazon Instant Video store.

The service will be available to all Amazon customers, whether they’re Prime subscribers or not.

It’s not yet known whether Amazon Studios content such as Alpha House and recent pilots of Mozart in the Jungle and The After and others will be available or are exclusive to Prime Instant Video.

Anybody with an Amazon account will be able to sign up for Amazon Instant Video. You won’t have to have a Prime or a Prime Instant Video subscription in order to enjoy Amazon Instant Video.
