BBC iPlayer app coming to Windows Phone 7.5 and 8

The BBC has announced that a BBC iPlayer app will be coming soon to Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8 phones.

Heading to the Windows Store in the near future, the app will be available to download for free quickly jump to the iPlayer website through a live tile on the homescreen.

In a blog post, the BBC’s Cyrus Saihan, head of business development for BBC Future Media said that the app will “wrap the BBC iPlayer mobile website together with our media player,” referring to the software that’s used to run the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport apps for Android.

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to BBC iPlayerWhether you’ll need to install a BBC Media Player app on your Nokia Lumia 920 or not before you can use the iPlayer is not yet known. Details are somewhat thin on the ground now with no mention if you’ll be able to download programmes as well as stream them, or even if you can stream over both 3G, 4G and WiFi.

Whatever form BBC iPlayer takes when it hits the Windows Store, we’re happy that the popular streaming service is coming to yet another mobile platform. The more screens we can catch up with EastEnders, Strictly Come Dancing and the rest on, the better.
