BBC Sport’s World Cup Rewind to show 1966 final and classic moments in run-up to Brazil 2014

BBC Sport has announced that it will stream classic moments in football, including England’s historic victory over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final, as part of a run-up to coverage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. 

Other classic moments include the infamous ‘Hand of God’ quarter-final match between Argentina and England in the 1986 World Cup and Archie Gemmill’s celebrated ‘wonder goal’ during the Scotland vs The Netherlands group match in the 1978 World Cup. 

As with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the action will be available across PC, mobile, tablet and smart TVs including Samsung and platforms like Freetime and Virgin Media TiVo.

The matches will be presented ‘as live’ with running text commentary and contributions from guests including Gary Lineker. 

Football fans will be able to watch online at bbc.co.uk/worldcup while mobile, tablet and smart TV viewers will be able to stream the games from their apps. 

Ben Gallop, Head of BBC Sport Interactive, said: “With the end of the football season drawing near, this is a great way to bring fans together again and to start getting excited about this year’s World Cup. 

“We’ve had some fantastic moments over the years, as well as some painful ones, and we’re looking forward to giving the country a way of experience those highs and lows like never before – with full, modern, digital coverage.” 

The first match – England vs West Germany, 1966 – kicks off on Friday, May 30 at 12:00pm. The full schedule is below: 

  • Friday 30 May, 12pm: England vs West Germany, 1966 final
  • Saturday 31 May, 3pm: Scotland vs The Netherlands, 1978 group match
  • Wednesday 4 June, 12pm: England vs Argentina, 1986 quarter-final
  • Saturday 7 June, 3pm: England vs Germany, 1990 semi-final
  • Sunday 8 June, 3pm: Spain vs Northern Ireland, 1982 group match
