North Yorkshire starts to feel fibre: Broadband Rollout Roundup 05/10/2012

We’ve been not been expecting much on the Broadband Rollout Roundup front ever since we heard that BT had announced services going down as a result of the second of the UK’s floods this year.

That said, there’s been some activity on the fringes from BT Openreach, beginning to connect parts of North Yorkshire to its next-gen fibre network and a handful of other places getting connected to faster speeds.

This week’s broadband rollout roundup sees the advent of Gigler in Bournemouth, turning over 21,000 homes on to 1Gbps FTTP broadband in the coastal city.

Inclement elements aside, there’s still enough broadband rollout action for this week’s Broadband Rollout Roundup.

North Yorkshire starts to feel fibre: Broadband Rollout Roundup 05/10/2012

Amotherby and Ainderby Steeple are the first two communities for benefit from BT fibre broadband in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is one of the UK counties paying BT to upgrade the creaky old copper lines. The plan is that 90 per cent of homes and businesses will be connected to either FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) or FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) lines by the end of 2014, with the last 10 per cent getting a guaranteed speed of at least 2Mbps and a top speed of 24Mbps.

The ‘Superfast North Yorkshire’ project has got underway with BT announcing that Amotherby and Ainderby Steeple will be the first two communities in rural North Yorkshire to get FTTC lines. By Spring 2013, 11,000 homes and businesses will be able to get faster broadband from BT.

We can’t help but notice that BT is starting with two places beginning with ‘A’ – we hope for the sake of those living in Weeton that BT isn’t going through the county alphabetically.

BT fibre broadband for five more locations this week

BT has also upgraded five more exchanges this week, with FTTC broadband available to order in selected locations connected to the following exchanges:

Grantham (FTTC) South Kesteven District
Desborough (FTTC) Kettering District (B)
Mansfield (FTTC) Mansfield District
Gedling (FTTC) Gedling District (B)
Kendal (FTTC) South Lakeland District

Note that just because your exchange has been upgraded to FTTC, it doesn’t mean that your nearest street cabinet has been. You might not be able to immediately get BT Infinity broadband here or at all – best best is to read our feature and to keep checking back at SamKnows.

Gigler brings 1Gbps FTTP fibre broadband to Bournemouth

Gigler is a brand new ISP based in Bournemouth that’s not skimping on the download speeds. All of the packages on offer give you an up to 1Gbps download speed, up to 500Mbps upload speed and 1ms latency as standard. Nice.

There’s a one-off £50 fee for installation and you pay either £25, £35 or £50 each month depending on whether you want 80GB, 250GB or unlimited usage to play with. That’s a lot to pay each month for broadband that doesn’t come with calls but you won’t have to pay line rental and you’ll get some of the fastest speeds going.
