BT has announced that 24,000 homes and businesses in North Yorkshire will be able to plug into superfast broadband speeds this Summer.
Areas including Pateley Bridge, Sleights, Rufforth and Ripon will be able to access download speeds of up to 80Mbps under he latest phase of rollout under the Superfast North Yorkshire plan.
It’s expected that 10,000 homes and businesses not already covered by BT’s commercial roll-out by the end of March.
Additionally, BT will be improving fibre broadband access in York, Malton, and Dringhouses throughout the first part of 2013.
This will take the total number of premises with access to fibre broadband in the county to more than 160,000. In total, BT and Superfast North Yorkshire will connect 365,000 premises, roughly 90 per cent of the county, to faster broadband by 2014. By this Summer, over a third of these locations should be connected, so we’re seeing good progress on this front.
As it the case with BT’s broadband upgrades elsewhere, the majority of places will benefit from FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) broadband, which gives you speeds of up to 80Mbps, with a handful of locations getting the faster, more future-proofed FTTP (Fibre to the Premises). FTTP lines will provide download speeds of up to 330Mbps and have been proven to go even faster – up to 10Gbps.
Later this year, BT also plans to launch an FTTP On Demand program, which will let businesses and homes upgrade their FTTC lines to FTTP for a one-off cost – albeit a pretty hefty one.
