BT free WiFi comes to 1,500 Barclays branchesBarclays has become the latest place on the UK high street to get free WiFi, courtesy of BT.

Free WiFi is now available in over 1,500 Barclays branches, giving those standing in cashier cues or waiting to see their bank manager something to do.

Access to Barclays in-store WiFi will be free to everyone, whether they’re BT customers or not. Customers will be able to connect to ‘BarclaysFreeWifi’ on their phones, tablets and laptops.

The idea is that customers will connect to online banking services like Barclays Pingit in order to manage small payments while they’re waiting in line. While the main point of internet banking is that you don’t actually have to be in the bank to use it, we won’t say no to free WiFi.

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to BT WifiBT’s research shows that free in-store WiFi is high on consumers most-wanted list, with 41 per cent saying they could do with some when shopping around.

Currently, just 1,500 of Barclay’s 1,700-odd branches have been outfitted with free WiFi. The remaining branches are due to have WiFi installed over the next two months.

BT also provides free WiFi for Starbucks customers and Hilton, Macdonald and Thistle hotels.

There are over 4 million BT WiFi hotspots in the UK, the majority of which are only available to BT subscribers.
