BT Sport may be free to superfast fibre broadband subscribers

BT will attempt to boost fibre broadband take-up by offering its BT Sport channel free to superfast subscribers this Summer, it’s rumoured.

The promotion is expected to be confirmed on Thursday (May 9) when more details of BT Sport are announced at the Olympic Park in London.

Friday will see BT’s full year financial results which are predicted to show a £2.5 billion profit – the same as it’s spending on its commercial fibre broadband rollout around the UK.

Alongside this will be Aviva Premiership Rugby, live football from Europe, the USA and Brazil, and the Scottish Premier League.

Unlike ESPN today, BT Sport won’t be available as a bundle to Sky Sports customers, but will be retailed separately as well as being available on BT Vision. A deal for Virgin Media customers has yet to emerge but is expected.

BT has already declared it plans to be substantially cheaper for pubs to show than Sky’s notoriously expensive rates.

The Mail On Sunday’s prediction of free BT Sport with fibre broadband comes from a note from City analysts at the Nomura bank – the financial world’s equivalent of a horse-racing tipster.

BT refused to comment on the prediction.
