BT Wifi lights up 752,000 hotspots across North East and East Midlands

BT has revealed where 752,000 of its 5 million BT Wifi hotspots are situated across the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber and the East Midlands.

BT Wifi, the new name for both BT Openreach and BT Fon, is available in more than 138,000 locations in the North East, with roughly 12,000 of these located in Newcastle.

Across Yorkshire and the Humber more than 292,000 BT wireless hotspots have flowered, with a healthy 35,000 of these blooming in Leeds. Demand for data across the East Midlands is supplied by a meaty 322,000 hotspots.

Yes this is a picture of a BT phone box in London. But it illustrates the ubiquity of BT Wifi well.

Owen Moody, BT’s East Midlands regional director, said: “We are seeing growing use of our network as WiFi users spend more time online and use more data. People are now so confident and comfortable with their gadgets, we’ve had to meet the demand with more hotspots in a wider choice of places – on the high street and in thousands of neighbourhoods across the region.”

Last week, BT announced that over 5 million BT Wifi hotspots had been set up over the UK and Ireland. We’re still waiting on the full breakdown of figures from BT. At the last count, the South East of England remains the UK’s most BT Wifi-hungry region with roughly 750,000 hotspots set up. In London there’s over 543,000 hotspots and in Scotland there’s 464,000.

BT revealed that between April 2012 and March 2013, 13 petabytes (13 billion megabytes) of data was consumed across the wireless network altogether. In terms of scale, that’s equivalent to streaming The Hobbit in HD non-stop for 1,042 years or downloading 3.9 billion MP3s.
