EE 4G hits 100th UK town, Accrington ushered in by Ian Rush

EE’s delivery of 4G mobile broadband services across the UK continues unabated with Accrington, the most recent location to celebrate a superfast switch-on.

Accrington, the 100th town to benefit from EE’s rollout, will soon be joined by Ashford, Bicester, Colchester, Guildford, Milton Keynes, Redhill, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and Woking later this month.

Today’s announcement sees EE reaching 60 per cent of the UK population with 4G some ten months after launching. Later this week, O2 and Vodafone will switch on their 4G services but it’ll be some time before they can reach as many people.

Not wanting to pass up an opportunity for promotion, EE roped in footballing legend Ian Rush to give his thoughts on the news. Rush, a Welshman, actually made his mark with Liverpool F.C. but is synonymous with Accrington Stanley thanks to a 1980’s TV spot launched by the Milk Marketing Board.

“It’s great to see that Accrington is grabbing headlines again – this time for being the 100th town in the UK to get superfast 4G from EE,” said Rush. “It’s fantastic to be part of the big 4G switch on, and we’ll all be raising a glass of milk at the Accrington Stanley clubhouse to celebrate!”

For those who didn’t have to suffer the original advert in all its glory when growing up, here it is:

Steven Day added: “We’re all about connecting people and football legend Ian Rush is intrinsically connected to Accrington thanks to the 1980s Milk Board ad which can be still be enjoyed today online and streamed without any annoying buffering on your mobile thanks to 4G!”

Not content to increase its 4G footprint, EE also announces today that Sunderland, Sutton Coldfield, Walsall, West Bromwich and Wolverhampton all benefit from faster download speeds on the network. Technically, EE speed doubling gives customers up to 150Mbps, but given that only a few devices on the market can actually achieve 150Mbps, average speeds enjoyed on doubled EE connections ranges between 24-30Mbps.

EE aims to have 70 per cent of the UK able to access 4G by the end of 2013. By the end of 2014, it’s hoped that EE’s 4G will be available to 98 per cent of the population.
