Freesat launches low-cost Free Time satellite catch-up TV box

Subscription-free satellite TV provider Freesat has launched a new satellite set-top box that features its Free Time catch-up service for only £99.

The Free Time box is manufactured by Humax and will be available to buy from September 12 at retailers including John Lewis, Currys, PC World and a range of independents.

The Free Time service was launched last year and features a ‘Roll Back’ TV guide that lets viewers find programmes available through catch-up for up to seven days. Also included is Free Time’s Showcase, providing daily TV recommendations and enhanced on-demand services.

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to Freesat“The new Freesat HD with freetime box is a natural extension of our award winning TV service, and it’s great to build on the popularity of the service,” said Matthew Huntington, Freesat’s chief technology officer.

“It’s a product we’re really proud of, offering the popular benefits of freetime such as Catch-Up and On-Demand TV, including BBC iPlayer, 4oD and YouTube, via a slick TV Guide which rolls back in time and also gives recommendations on what to watch.”

The new Freesat HD with Free Time box allows viewers to tune into more than 180 free digital TV and radio channels, six of which are available to watch in HD. Freesat said more channels will be available in the New Year.

The new box offers the full set of the UK’s on-demand players from the UK’s major free broadcasters – BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD, Demand 5 – and YouTube.

Graham North, commercial director of Humax, said: “It offers the first low cost option for the Free Time range, without compromising on the performance and quality that TV viewers expect from Humax and Freesat.”
