How can I get KnowHow Movies? iOS and Android apps incomingWhat’s new with KnowHow Movies?

KnowHow Movies which launched on iOS devices earlier this week won’t be headed to Android devices until later this year.

We’ve been told by a spokesperson that the KnowHow Movies Android app is estimated to be ready sometime in October.

No word still on what kinds of phones or tablets will be supported. We’d expected that big name Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X would get support and maybe older Android phones too – the coming soon section of KnowHow Movies’ site has hinted at support for phones from the HTC Desire era. Nothing’s set in stone and as soon as we know more we’ll update.

KnowHow Movies is available now for iOS (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) and is coming to Android phones and tablets.

Subscribers will now be able to watch movies on up to five devices. So you’ll be to start watching a flick on your iPhone 4S or Galaxy S3 and then carry on where you left off on your LG smart TV when you get in.

The iOS app requires your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to be running iOS 4.3 or later. We’ve not seen the Android app appearing in Google Play just yet, but will update with more info once we have it.

The KnowHow Movies apps are powered by Rovi Corporation which uses Rovi’s advanced adaptive streaming format, DivX Plus Streaming.

This allows for 1080p HD support, subtitles, multiple language tracks and smoother fast forward and rewind controls.

Rovi has also signed a deal with Sainsbury’s to launch a separate video on-demand platform. So we’re expecting to see these features included in Sainsbury’s service too once it launches.

What is KnowHow Movies?

KnowHow Movies is a new streaming service that gives you access to movies and TV episodes. The unique angle of KnowHow Movies is that it comes pre-installed on a number of smart TVs sold from Currys, Dixons and PC World. It’s also available on PCs and Macs and is coming to games consoles, phones and tablets.

No downloads or installs needed; if you buy a smart TV from any of these places you should have KnowHow Movies already on there and ready to do from the moment you turn your TV on.

KnowHow Movies works on an on-demand/pay per view basis. You basically pay for what you want to watch when you want to watch it. There’s no subscription fees or monthly packages, just films and TV episodes ready and waiting.

Average prices work out at £3.99 to rent a film in standard definition (SD) and £4.99 for HD rentals. Older films, many of which are not available in HD, are priced at £1.99. Standard definition films cost £12.99 to buy with HD versions costing £17.99.

In terms of TV shows it doesn’t look like that there’s anything available to rent through KnowHow Movies right now. There is however plenty to buy, with prices ranging from 99p per episode to £2.49 per episode (or £2.99 if you want to buy in HD).

Titles like Shame, Limitless and both subtitled and dubbed versions of the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo films make up part of KnowHow Movies’ film roster.

Just over 300 films were available at the last count, but KnowHow Movies is adding new titles to its collection every month. New film releases will be available the same day they are released on DVD or Blu-Ray, so it’s only a matter of time before the KnowHow collection grows.

In terms of TV shows, there’s only one deal done with Warner TV at the moment, meaning Gossip Girl, The Big Bang Theory and Smallville alongside the remake of V and every episode of Friends.

KnowHow Movies doesn’t have the biggest selection out there, but its growing and depending on where you buy your smart TV, it’s already installed.

Slightly annoying if you’ve got a Mac or your laptop isn’t quite up to spec. This doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t watch HD movies on your TV though.

If your smart TV if it’s compatible with WiDi (or you’ve got a WiDi receiver), you can stream 1080p HD movies from KnowHow to your TV set. A bit of a workaround admittedly but at least it’s possible…
