Hyperoptic connects Chelsea residents to Gigabit fibre broadband

Hyperoptic connects Chelsea residents to Gigabit fibre broadbandHyperoptic, provider of high speed gigabit fibre broadband, has revealed that its connected Chelsea residents to its hyper-fast next-gen network.

Earlier this week it was announced that BT and the Kensington and Chelsea authorities had come to an agreement about the siting of fibre broadband street cabinets. Last year, there was a rather public spat between the two. BT wanted to install street cabinets in certain areas and Kensington and Chelsea town bigwigs objected on the grounds they’d spoil the local flavour.

At the time, Hyperoptic offered to take on the job, piping FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) to the entire area. While BT and the council have smoothed things over now, it turns out that Hyperoptic has installed its services in some areas.

Dana Tobak, Managing Director of Hyperoptic said:

“It is encouraging to hear that Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council have recognised the need for faster broadband and are taking a positive step to improve overall speeds in the area. Since we reached out to residents, in response to the Council’s previous rejection for the request of additional cabinets, we have already made great progress in lighting up developments including Cheney Court where all residents are now experiencing speeds of either 100Mbps or 1Gbps and are enjoying the benefits of a real fibre solution.”

Even though it looks like BT will be connecting the majority of Chelsea locales to its fibre-based network, Hyperoptic’s services are purely FTTP. This offers a more future-proofed solution than FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) which is what the majority of homes and businesses on BT’s network will be connected to, at least for the short term.

Hyperoptic’s services come in three flavours of speed, 20Mbps, 100Mbps and 1Gbps. BT’s Infinity services offer download speeds of up to 38Mbps and 78Mbps, with the lucky few who have had BT’s FTTP lines able to get top speeds of 330Mbps.

Right now Hyperoptic’s services are only available in central London, predominantly in new-build areas and apartment blocks. There’s plans to bring Hyperoptic broadband to another UK city and to have half a million customers signed up within the next five years. Hyperoptic recently announced that it had over 20,000 subscribers.
