KC Connect service wires up Hull’s Connected TVs: Smart TV Tuesday

KC Connect is a new service from KC which is aimed squarely at early adopters of Smart TVs.

KC Connect will see an engineer come to your house and connect your Smart TV directly to your master socket – us Brits are statistically useless at that kind of thing – and give you a bigger than usual monthly usage cap, in anticipation of you using services like BBC iPlayer, Lovefilm, Netflix and the rest.

KC’s Nick Thompson said at the launch of KC Connect that; “Catch-up and on-demand TV accounts for about 10 per cent of all viewing these days, with BBC iPlayer alone attracting 1.8 million viewers every day. And people increasingly want to be able to watch catch-up TV on the big screen with perfect picture quality in the comfort of their living rooms, rather than hunched over a laptop or tablet computer.”

As well as the option of an engineer visit, there’s a self-install option which throws you a couple of Powerline adapters, letting you pipe HD TV around the house.

KC Connect is available now as part of two bundle deals; KC Connect and KC Xtra Connect.

KC Connect gives you the fastest speeds you can get on KC’s ADSL2+ network, a 60GB download cap and Evening & Weekend calls to local and national plus 0870, 0845 and 197 numbers for £36.99 a month (plus a £10 set-up fee).

KC Xtra Connect gives you the same top speed available, 300GB to play with and Anytime calls to the same numbers for £45.99 a month.

“KC Connect is the only service of its type in the UK,” says Thompson. “It means our customers can make the most of the explosion in online content that’s changing British viewing habits.”

While only available to residents of Hull covered by KC’s network, we’re liking the sound of KC Connect. It gives those interested in accessing web-based TV on their large plasma TVs a bespoke option, rather than “hunched over a laptop or tablet,” as KC puts it.

Virgin Media’s TiVo box provides access to an increasing line-up of Smart TV apps. But aside from that there’s no other UK ISP offering an all-in-one broadband and Smart TV service. We hope that KC Connect inspires similar services as superfast broadband continues roll out across the UK.
