The Xbox Kinect is to blame for the delay in releasing BBC iPlayer on the Xbox One, claims an unnamed software developer.
According to games blog Ultimate Gaming Paradise, the motion sensor is cited as the major stumbling block preventing the app appearing on Microsoft’s next-generation console.
“We can’t seem to get it working; it [the Kinect sensor] is causing a major development headache for the team,” the unnamed programmer told the publication.
The programmer said that large chunks of code were being rewritten in an effort to resolve the debacle. According to the report, testing had unearthed a problem where the viewer’s slightest move, such as picking up a coffee cup while watching, would cause the app to “interrupt entertainment playback”.
The BBC iPlayer app was supposed to be available on the launch day of Xbox One on 22 November last year. However, the BBC has delayed this without any reason being given for the postponement.
“BBC iPlayer is already available to audiences on over 1,000 devices and platforms in the UK. Whilst we are working to bring BBC iPlayer to Xbox One in the future, we have no further details to share at this time,” the BBC said in a statement.
The programmer told the publication that iPlayer was unlikely to appear on Xbox One before April at the earliest.
However, Sony’s next generation PlayStation 4 does have iPlayer as well as Netflix, Now TV and Demand 5. The app was available on day one of launch of the Sony console.
