Lovefilm pitches Mozart and sport for new drama pilots

Lovefilm’s parent Amazon will give UK viewers a taste of three new dramas which could be HBO-style hits – with classical music and American football among the settings.

The half-hour pilots will be available free in the UK on Lovefilm early next year, and in the USA on Amazon Instant Video, with viewers’ opinions deciding the winner.

Mozart In The Jungle, Outlaws and Transparent will follow the Amazon Originals public trial of comedy and children’s pilots in April this year, which will bear fruit this autumn.

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to LovefilmRoy Price, director of Amazon Studios, said: “We are thrilled to be working on these pilots with such talented creators with passionate visions for new shows. We are excited to hear what customers think of the shows.”

Written by Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Alex Timbers, Mozart In The Jungle is all about the sex, drugs-and classical music behind the stage door at a modern symphony.

At the other end of professional performance, Outlaws follows the players, coaches and owners of a professional American football team, hoping for some of the success of Friday Night Lights.

On the quirky side, Transparent is a dark comedy about a family with ‘serious boundary issues’, and the secrets that spill out across the generations following a dramatic admission. Writer and director Jill Solway has both a Sundance gong and history on Six Feet Under.
