Multi-screen Sky Sports F1 coverage for Red Button and iPad

Sky Sports F1 will launch with up to nine live HD feeds via the red button, online and a dedicated iPad app.

Formula 1 fans will be able to flick from the main race feed to onboard cameras, pit lane coverage, timing data, driver tracker and highlights reels.

Sky Sports F1 HD launches on March 9 on channel 408, and interactive features go live on March 16 at 4.30am UK time, with the first practice from Melbourne.

David Gibbs, director of Sky Sports Digital Media, said: “We’ve been able to start from scratch and develop a really exciting experience so wherever you are, you’re not going to miss any of the Formula 1 action.

“We have developed a new concept in our iPad app with the Sky race control plus all the other in-depth analysis.”

All the red button feeds will be in high definition with 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound, and they’ll also be available online to Sky Sports subscribers (including Sky Go).

iPad coverage will be built into a revamp of the Sky Sports News app: Sky Sports for iPad, which will be exclusive to Sky Sports subscribers.

This will mix all the red button streams with the option to watch full screen video or alongside Twitter feeds, timing information, driver tracker and standings in the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. Before and after the races, fans will be able to keep up with F1 news and video interviews.

Twitter feeds are curated to give the best reactions from professional commentators, F1 insiders and fans.

Sky’s also working on a pioneering split-screen experience which will play up to three live video streams on the iPad at the same time.

It’s also working on ways to integrate more driver data such as live use of KERS, speed changes and G-forces.

Sadly, there are no plans for an Android tablet app, said Gibbs, because the Android market is currently too fragmented and the iPad still dominates the tablet market.
