Orange and T-Mobile have promised LTE high speed 4G broadband as Orange stemmed the loss of its home broadband subscribers.
Everything Everywhere, the parent company for the two mobile brands, said it plans to build on shared 3G networks with a 4G mobile broadband service.
Data traffic on smartphones and dongles brought almost a quarter of Orange and T-Mobile’s income by the end of 2011 – a third more than a year before.
Although Orange lost 28,000 home broadband customers over the year, in the last three months of the year it stabilised at 713,000, with no losses at all.
Olaf Swantee, chief executive officer of Everything Everywhere, said: “Over the next three years, we plan to invest more than £1.5bn to improve network speed, reliability and coverage, including double digit growth in network investment in 2012 over 2011.
“This includes the implementation of 4G ready technology, following successful trials undertaken in Cornwall.”
