The BBC will show Peter Kay’s first sitcom for the channel on iPlayer before it is show on television.
The Show, called Car Share, sees Kay playing a supermarket worker making a car journey with a colleague as part of a company car share scheme. The comedian also directs the six half-hour episodes.
Each journey brings fresh insight into John and Kayleigh’s lives, with twists and turns in their unlikely relationship. The series is set and will be filmed in the north-west.
All six episodes of the series will be made available on iPlayer before being broadcast on BBC One. This will be the first-ever series to premiere on BBC iPlayer in its entirety before a linear transmission, as part of a 40-hour content trial, approved by the BBC Trust.
BBC One controller Danny Cohen said: “It is hugely exciting that Peter Kay is coming to BBC One with his new series – even more so with the innovative plan we have to launch the show online.”
Peter Kay made his name with Channel Four shows Phoenix Nights and Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere.
He said: “To be finally working with the BBC on a new comedy is a great opportunity.”sx
