Rio Ferdinand testimonial Manchester United Sevilla game showing on BT Sport

BT Sport has announced that its snagged Rio Ferdinand’s upcoming testimonial game between Manchester United and Sevilla. 

The testimonial, held at United’s Old Trafford grounds, will be broadcast on August 9 on BT Sport and streamed online. 

Only BT Sport customers will be able to watch the game live on TV, but anyone will be able to watch the game for free online at riotestimonial.com. You’ll need to register in order to get access but there’s no cost to watch the game.

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to BT SportAhead of the launch of the 2013/14 season proper, the match is being held to honour Ferdinand’s 12 years at the club. The centre forward will also act as a presenter and interviewer for future BT Sport programmes.

“To mark this special occasion, we’ve put together a groundbreaking plan to help make this game available to millions of fans across the globe, and it is something of a technology first for a game to be streamed live on this scale.” 

Rio Ferdinand adds: “Manchester United is a unique club with fans in every corner of the globe so I am delighted that my testimonial is going to be so widely available to all of the club’s supporters in so many countries. It is going to be a fantastic and fun evening and there will be famous sporting faces and celebrities popping up all over the place, so it should be an incredible night.” 

BT Sport launches on August 1 and will be free to BT Vision, BT YouView and Sky TV customers who take out a BT Broadband subscription. Sky customers who don’t want a BT Broadband service can instead opt to subscribe to the BT Sport package – which consists of BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN – for £12/month or £15/month to get access to these channels’ HD counterparts.
