Sky doesn’t need O2 and Be subs to beat Virgin: UK broadband league

Sky has surged ahead of Virgin Media in the broadband leaderboard before it’s even added more than half a million O2 and Be subscribers.

Almost 4.39 million UK homes now get broadband with Sky after 152,000 new sign-ups arrived in the first quarter of 2013.

The boost puts Sky on target to exceed five million broadband homes in June, when it starts counting the 580,000 arrivals from its takeover of O2 and Be broadband this week.

“We have also continued to improve the economics of broadband, moving more customers over to our fully unbundled product. At the end of Q3, 96 per cent of customers were on-net, with 75 per cent of these customers on our fully-unbundled MPF product.”

The results seal Sky’s position as a multi-headed communications behemoth, with home phone subscribers rising 186,000 to 4.2m.

The Holy Grail of triple play – broadband, phone and TV in one home – was clutched ever-tighter to Sky’s chest as it rose 132,000 customers to 3.68m.
