Sky Go and Catch-Up to get huge channel boost in next year

More than 10 live streaming TV channels will be added to Sky Go by summer 2014, with more than 20 new catch-up channels added to on demand on Sky+HD.

Sky will also expand the range of TV box-sets available through Sky On Demand by 50 per cent after a huge rise in broadband-based viewing.

Subscribers to the Entertainment Extra+ tariff will benefit most from the improvements, with Sky Go mobile channels mirroring those available on TV.

This is about to get a lot busier

Read Recombu Digital’s guides to Sky On Demand and Sky GoLuke Bradley-Jones, Sky’s director of TV products, comments: “During the last year, Sky customers were connecting their Sky boxes to broadband at an average rate of around 200 an hour.

“As a result we’ve seen an astonishing five-fold increase in average weekly downloads for our On Demand service as millions more customers choose to enjoy TV on their terms.

“When customers connect their Sky+HD box to broadband, they benefit from access to the UK’s biggest Catch Up TV service and an extensive On Demand library of box sets and exclusive movies.

“We’re delighted not only that customers are embracing our connected services in record numbers, but when they do, they tell us that they get a huge amount of extra value from Sky.”

More than a quarter of Sky’s customers – 2.7 million homes – have connected their Sky+HD box to their broadband to receive catch-up and other on-demand services.

Dramas such as Game of Thrones are proving particularly popular for on-demand viewing, with more than a million downloads on season three this Spring, and 2.3 million views on Sky Go.

The Sky Go service has more than 3.3 million regular users, and 166,000 have upgraded to the £5/month Sky Go Extra, which lets them use it on more devices and download TV shows and films to watch offline.

Sky’s also hoping to boost on-demand viewing with a lower-cost Sky+HD wireless connector and a new Sky+HD box with built-in WiFi.

Sky Catch Up channels already include iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD, Demand 5, Sky1, Sky Living, Sky Atlantic, and National Geographic, with Fox and SyFy coming this summer.
