Sky to hike line rental for broadband and phone in time for Christmas

Sky will increase line rental charges for its broadband and home phone products, just in time for Christmas.

The price rise will kick in on December 1 taking Sky line rental up from £15.40/month by £1 to £16.40/month.

The increase in line rental is now visible on Sky’s site, where you can see that the entry-level ADSL service Sky Broadband unlimited will cost a total of £23.90/month – £7.50 for the broadband and £16.40 for line rental.

The increase still puts the cost of line rental behind BT’s planned price rise – the UK’s biggest ISP will be putting line rental up from £15.99/month to £16.99/month at the same time.

BT customers will still be able to take advantage of a line rental saver from December 1 – paying £169.90 up front will get you 12 months’ of line rental for the price of 10. Sky customers don’t have the option to make use of line rental saver since the company canned it back in January

Sky Broadband itself will not be going up in price meaning the £7.50/month, £20/month and £30/month charges for Broadband Unlimited (up to 17Mbps) Fibre Unlimited (up to 38Mbps) and Fibre Unlimited Pro (up to 76Mbps).

This means that the total regular prices for Sky’s broadband services – not including promotional introductory rates – will be £23.90/month, £36.40/month and £46.40/month after December 1.

Sky’s previously free voicemail service will also be going up to £1/month. This is still lower than BT’s £1.75/month charge but that won’t be of much comfort to those used to getting it for nothing.

Aside from that, prices for Sky’s main home phone packages – Talk Weekends, Talk Anytime and Talk Anytime International – will remain as they have for the last four years; free with line rental, £5/month and £10/month respectively.
