TalkTalk gains 47,000 Fibre subs but only 5,000 new broadband customers

TalkTalk has posted its latest quarterly results, which shows that many customers are signing up for superfast broadband.

In the last three months, 47,000 customers signed up for TalkTalk’s FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet)-based Fibre product. In total, 142,000 subscribers now take the service which offers customers top download speeds of either 38Mbps or 76Mbps.

Three months ago, there were just 95,000 customers taking TalkTalk Fibre. This has been partially attributed to the fact that new customers can now order Fibre, whereas previously the superfast product was only available to existing customers.

By contrast, main rivals Virgin Media, Sky and BT all added 27,000, 110,000 and 156,000 new customers respectively in the last three months. Compared to figures from last year this still represents a growth of 33,000.

In total, TalkTalk has 4,076,000 broadband customers, putting it a few hundred thousand behind closest rival Virgin Media, which has 4,336,600 broadband subscribers.

TalkTalk has experienced stronger growth of it’s YouView-based TalkTalk TV product. Chief executive Dido Harding said: “We are delighted with the progress we have made in the first half. We have the fastest growing TV business in the UK and we now expect to have nearly 1m TV customers by the end of [the financial year].

We are increasingly confident about the opportunity that we have to deliver sustainable growth by bringing affordable connectivity and innovative new products to Britain’s consumers and businesses.”
