TalkTalk YouView Essentials box to launch in autumn 2013

A low-cost YouView box for TalkTalk’s Essentials broadband customers will go on sale this autumn.

The single-tuner ‘zapper’ box will have no built-in recording, but will be able to connect to catch-up and on-demand services via TalkTalk broadband.

The Essentials TV box had been scheduled for launch by April 2014, but has now been confirmed for ‘autumn 2013’ – that’s November to December in calendar months.

Read Recombu Digital’s guides to YouView and TalkTalk TVTalkTalk’s Q1 2014 financial results announced: “This will be a substantially lower priced set top box but with full YouView functionality. This will enable all of our customers to access TV.”

As well as catch-up TV, the Essentials box will be able to connect to the TalkTalk Player, which gives users access to a library of 4,000 TV shows and films, as well as the option to subscribe to more live streaming TV channels with a rolling monthly subscription but no contract.

The TalkTalk TV Boosts start from £5/month for a handful of core Sky channels, to £30/month for Sky Sports.

TalkTalk hasn’t revealed whether the Essentials YouView box will be given away to susbcribers or sold at a low cost.

Dido Harding, TalkTalk’s chief executive, blogged: “We are fast becoming the natural home for families seeking great value entertainment, and our research show that customers who sign up for TV are very satisfied with the service, including signing up, installation and the functionality of the YouView box.

“We have exciting plans for YouView from TalkTalk, with more content partners coming on board and improvements to the way the set top box works, and we’re delighted that so many British families are set to benefit.”
