Virgin Media bringing superfast broadband to Brideshead’s Castle Howard and rural Yorkshire

Virgin Media is all set to connect Castle Howard and other areas of rural Yorkshire to superfast broadband.

Working with network management company LN Communications, the cable company will connect the Castle, perhaps best known as the eponymous setting for adaptations of Brideshead Revisited as well as other, less iconic areas of the Yorkshire.

An area covering 12,000 square kilometres will see business parks across Darlington, Barlby, Darley, Kettleworth, Bradley, Northallerton and Stokesley able to connect to speed of up to 1Gbps and make use of Virgin Media WiFI services.

Brideshead-ends: Virgin Media will connect Yorkshire’s iconic Castle Howard to 21st Century speeds

Simon Hayhurst, Managing Director at LN communications, said: “Our partnership with Virgin Media Business gives us a connectivity boost that enables us to provide superfast broadband in areas that have historically been difficult to reach. Our innovative approach and strong relationship with the company, combined with the scalability of its network will mean a huge step in the direction of digital innovation for Yorkshire.”

Mario Di Mascio, executive director, sales Virgin Media Business, said: “We’re excited to bring great broadband at amazing speeds to customers throughout Yorkshire, especially to rural and more remote areas.

“This partnership with LN Communications brings the UK one step closer to its goal to provide 95 per cent of the population with high-speed connectivity by 2017. The internet is a gateway to the global economy and we’re glad to open it up for the people and businesses in Yorkshire as digital technology is a key driver of growth for the UK economy.”

Virgin Media is not involved in the BDUK (Broadband Delivery for the UK) scheme which aims to connect 95 per cent of the UK to superfast broadband speeds by the end of 2016. This has’t stopped Virgin Media from adding rural areas to its cable network in the past and Virgin Media Business from bringing WiFi services to some of the UK’s biggest cities as part of the related Urban Broadband Fund.

With the recent acquisition of cable network SmallworldVirgin Media’s network currently covers around 12.5 million premises. The top speed available on Virgin Media’s residential network is being cranked up to 152Mbps, up from 120Mbps, this year.

Tests have shown that using current technology, Virgin Media’s network can provide download speeds of up to 1.5Gbps
