Virgin Media’s ultrafast broadband heading to 5,000 new Glasgow homes

Virgin Media is making superfast 152Mbps broadband available to 5,000 extra homes in Glasgow.

By the end of November, thousands of more homes in Scotland’s biggest city will be able to get up to 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 152Mbps broadband services and pay TV packages including Sky Sports and BT Sport HD.

The cable company says that download speeds will eclipse those offered by the FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) services offered by BT, Sky or TalkTalk in the Cumbernauld, Duntocher, Barrhead and Uddingston areas.

A different kind of ultrafast Virgin service will soon be arriving in Glasgow

Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Extending our network across the region means thousands more families will benefit from the UK’s fastest widely available broadband for the first time. We are proud to be supercharging Glasgow, helping build an exciting digital future for the city.”

As well as ‘supercharging’ Glasgow’s homes, Virgin Media will also create a ‘Digital Making Space’ at The Mitchell Library. This will give young people the chance to create video-controlled games and learn code going some way to address the UK’s digital skills crisis.

Neil Paterson from Digital Glasgow will be on hand to help kids learn new digital skills saying for those without IT know-how, the lessons will prove essential. The coaching classes will be available for children between November 17 and December 8 at the library.

Other ISPs bringing super and ultrafast broadband to Glasgow, include pure fibre provider Hyperoptic, which plans to deliver 1Gbps (1,000Mbps) broadband to select Glasgow properties by the end of the year. BT supplies free WiFi hotspots to the city and network arm Openreach will continue to increase its FTTC footprint.

In April, Ofcom announced Virgin Media was the fastest mainstream broadband supplier in the UK
