Virgin Tube WiFi hits 120 stations as O2 users get a free ride

WiFi on the London Underground reaches its target of 120 stations this week as Virgin Media added a dozen more hotspots including Bank, Baker Street and Earl’s Court.

O2 customers will be able to use the Virgin Tube network free from June as part of their O2 WiFi service, although unlike O2’s own WiFi hotspots, it’s not free to everyone else.

The new hotspots coming online this week will bring Transport for London and Virgin Media to the target of covering 120 stations, announced when the deal was signed in 2012.

“Virgin Media’s unique fibre optic network means we deliver unrivalled capacity for next generation digital services both inside and outside the home, meeting the increasing demand for wireless services.”

The latest stations connected are:

  • Acton Town
  • Baker Street
  • Bank & Monument
  • Caledonian Road
  • Earl’s Court
  • Holland Park
  • Ladbroke Grove
  • Maida Vale
  • Queen’s Park
  • Shepherd’s Bush (on the Central line)
  • Sloane Square
  • West Ruislip

The Underground WiFi network is already free to Virgin Media broadband customers, as well as EE and Vodafone mobile and broadband customers.

Everyone else can buy a daily, weekly or monthly pass costing £2, £5 or £10 for those vital moments as your carriage ingests and expels your fellow commuting cattle.

When the O2 deal goes live in June, customers with the O2 WiFi app on their devices will automatically connect to Virgin’s hotspots if their WiFi is switched on.

The only major UK mobile network not to reach a deal with Virgin Media is Three, although there’s still free TfL travel information and news through the web portal.
