80,000 strong petition against iPhone ‘gay-cure’ app

Gay rights activists have signed an 80,000 strong petition against an iPhone and iPad application which targets “homosexual strugglers”.

The application was developed by a pro-Christian group called Exodus International and aims to encourage people to change their sexuality.  Apple considered the application to have “no objectionable content”, despite its attempts at granting “freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus,”.

Apple did remove an application last year called the Manhattan Declaration which followed similar anti-gay lines. A petition from Change.org succeeded in getting the application taken down.

The current petition overview on Change.org explains that the new application is a means for Exodus to target youth. “In light of the recent wave of LGBT youth suicides, this tactic is particularly galling as it creates, legitimizes and fuels the ostracism of LGBT youth by their families”

The petition overview ends with “Apple needs to be told, loud and clear, that this is unacceptable. Stand with Truth Wins Out — demand that the iTunes store stop supporting homophobia and remove the Exodus app.”

Apple is famed for its strict selection process under which applications go when they enter the app store. Recent times however have seen the lines under which the normally prudish company deems acceptable become very much blurred. A ban on ‘sex apps’ has been followed with a more relaxed approach to gambling. Apple’s moral compass is all over the place it seems; damaging images and explicit material are not allowed, but homophobia and gambling are.
