As well as launching funky tablet/laptop hybrids today, Acer also unveiled an affordable new 7-inch Android tablet called the Iconia Tab 7.
Taking on the likes of Tesco’s Hudl, the Acer Iconia Tab 7 runs full Android 4.4 KitKat, which runs smoothly on the 1.3GHz quad-core Media Tek processor with 1GB of RAM. We didn’t get the chance to test out any games, but everything up to the most intensive action titles should run smoothly, and the tablet has no trouble streaming video.
The 7-inch IPS screen is bright and quite vibrant, and the 1280 x 800 pixel resolution keeps things crisp – that’s the same size and resolution as the Tesco Hudl. You get a choice of either 8GB or 16GB of storage, both of which can be expanded via the memory card slot cunningly hidden under a detachable flap on the rear of the Iconia Tab 7.
Beneath that flap you also get a SIM card slot, for staying connected wherever you happen to roam. The flap itself detaches easily enough, although we didn’t quite manage to get it to snap back fully in place on our demo unit – the corner was always jutting out slightly. Hopefully just an issue with our sample.
At a smidgen under 300g, the Iconia Tab 7 is very comfortable to clutch one-handed while you swipe and poke the screen. It’s also quite slim, making it easy to slip inside a bag or even a large pocket. We like the metallic finish, which feels solid enough to shrug off all kinds of punishment – definitely good if you’re always on the move.
You get a basic front-facing camera for Skyping your mates, and while we appeared quite crisp when we tested it out, our face was also rather dark – probably a good thing, to be honest. There’s also a 5-megapixel snapper on the back, which seems to capture crisp, clean images.
